Fun in Georgia

posted by Kyle on January 31st, 2009

Last night was a great concert at St. Lawrence. We tried a few new things like a powerpoint for the whole concert, nose flute for the Puppy Dog and my new ukulele. We saw some old friends and made some new ones. And the people of Lawrenceville sold more tickets than anyone has ever sold for a Popple concert! We are very excited that they were able to raise some money for their parish and hope we can come back sometime.

Thanks to everyone who came. Sorry we ran out of shirts . . . we do have more that you can order at the online store. It is great to see a parish so vibrant and supportive of the youth.

I stole this picture from Jamie’s facebook:

In Lawrenceville GA

Today we spent some time hanging out at the local high school and having lunch with some of the staff from the parish. While downtown we found several interesting things:

What else do you need? This store has it all!

And if you aren’t familiar with the Red Hat Ladies, this town has a store dedicated to them and their lifestyle. Check out their website for more info on them. You have to wear purple clothes and a red hat to fit in with them.

If you are in the greater Atlanta area, please come for the concert. Tickets are $10 and as of yesterday, 350 were sold . . . this is going to be fun! 7:30pm at St. Lawrence in Lawrenceville.

National Kazoo Day!

posted by Kyle on January 28th, 2009

Today is National Kazoo Day. And because we here at Popple headquarters love the kazoo, its simplicity and its ability to put smiles on faces, we thought this deserved a little something special.

That is why I, Kyle, will take a shower today . . . I haven’t yet and it is 2:30 here . . . but I will. I promise. In honor of the Kazoo and everything it has done for our country.

For more information on the campaign to make the kazoo the national instrument, check this out.

Back from Florida

posted by Kyle on January 27th, 2009

We had a great time in Florida and we are home for two days before leaving for Atlanta. We will be doing a concert in Lawrenceville @ St. Lawrence Catholic Church 6pm. Contact kshreck@saintlaw.org for tickets.

So, here is my favorite quote from St. Lawrence, the patron saint of comics and grillers:

While being burned alive, he said, “Turn me over I am done on this side.” What an amazing martyr!

St. Lawrence was martyred on August 10, in the year 258 A.D.

Off to Florida

posted by Kyle on January 21st, 2009

This weekend we venture down to Florida to play for some retreats and youth groups and a small family of armadillos. If I am lucky, perhaps I will come home with a visor!

I just got a new ukulele (I will have to post more on that later) that I will be trying out!  Oops! It is time to leave for daily mass . . . later.

Greg and Jennifer, You Win.

posted by Dan on January 12th, 2009

Our friends Greg and Jennifer Willits, who host the Sirius/XM radio morning show, “The Catholics Next Door,” recently interviewed actor Kevin Bacon. I missed the interview but I can only imagine how excited they were to get to speak to a legitimate movie star… Greg and Jennifer are total cinema-heads. I know from personal experience- they have a knowledge of movies that could rival any 17 year-old multiplex working, ticket tearing, popcorn jockey, it’s incredible. While it’s all well and good that they got the interview, the most exciting part of this story is what arrived at the Willits’ front door a few days later… that’s right… an autographed copy of Mr. Bacon’s 1984 land mark film that put the genre of ’80s hair dance-drama on the map… “Footloose.” A signed copy of this seminal film – arguably the most important film of the year I was born – unbelievable.

Greg and Jennifer are expecting a baby girl, I implore them to make the baby’s middle name “Footloose.”

Still Christmas Season

posted by Kyle on January 8th, 2009

In the Catholic Church, it is still Christmas season. Heck, we just celebrated the Epiphany (three Kings) last Sunday.

So, that means that this post is still timely. This is a rendition of the nativity that we did at the Youth Minister’s Convention in Cleveland.

Listener Feedback

I read this message today:

I was doing my Algebra homework only minutes ago, when I came upon a certain math problem involving Kenosha, Wisconsin. Initially, I didn’t see the Wisconsin, and I thought – “-GASP- COULD IT BE?!” And, alas, it was Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Now, ordinarly, this would not have gotten the same reaction from your average person. My fellow classmates will be unaffected by this certain problem and continue on with their un-Popple-ified lives.
But, I felt the need to share that with you, since there must really be a Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Now I know how to spell it. :)

Performance Ideas

posted by Dan on January 6th, 2009

I think the whole Popple “acoustic humor rock” shtick might be getting old. So I’m thinking we may start moving in a new direction… perhaps Irish dance meets fiddle music – family style. Kyle has more siblings than anyone knows what to do with and my girlfriend can teach us all to Irish dance. Added bonus, Kyle’s wife Kate is the most Irish looking person I know (red hair). Just a thought.

This band will perform at the Catholic Underground in LA just before Popple performs at Catholic Underground LA. Good times!
